Why They Aren’t Famous: They probably will be at some point, and that’s a bit of a bummer.

Faleepo Francisco’s track “Unsung Hero” is one that reminds me of the constant struggle that exists in the mind of all elitist culture snobs out of touch with the common man. What is worse? Bad music or boring music? On one hand, bad music is… well, bad. But at least is elicits an emotional response of some type, even if it isn’t the response the artist really intended for. While boring music is just that. It doesn’t press any buttons, it arrives, does exactly what you expect it to, and leaves without a fuss. Faleepo Fiasco (yeah, you can’t set me up like that) sits stubbornly in the latter column.
It’s technically fine, which is probably the best thing I can say about it. Which, to be fair, is a whole lot better than saying, “this song is the musical equivalent of stubbing your toe in the dark”. And even though the latter example of a critique might be more fun for me to write, it’s also not true.
Reading through their Facebook profile they note that they’re originally from North Queensland and have traditionally played in cover bands, and it really shows. Their sound is one that makes me think of a bunch of dudes who grew up with Triple M drive time radio, whose earliest gigs were at a Pig n Whistle/Northern Queensland equivalent, and for whom Frogstomp was the crowning jewel of Australian music in the 90’s (when everybody knows the correct answer to that is Gurg’s Unit).

As to the minutiae of the song, there are no screams to speak of, which is fine. Clean vocals at times border on impressively ranged, but never really hit a moment that makes me want to listen to it for close to 4 minutes. The lyrics are uninspired, laden with rock and roll tropes that were a cliché when Social Distortion did them 25 odd years ago. Speaking of which, there is a fun little bluesy solo at around 2:20 that is cheeky even if a little self indulgent.

Production is legitimately good. They’ve clearly dropped some money on it, and it shows. The mix leans a little too heavily on vocals, and echo-ing on both the vocals and the guitar track. Whether that’s a stylistic choice or an attempt to massage out some lack lustre playing, I don’t know, but I’d rather it weren’t there.
The band has a drummer and a rhythm guitarist, who also appear on this song.
Given their background, I’m willing to bet this band fucking kills it live. Put them tiny room with intoxicated people and they’ll start to shine. But that isn’t at all apparent in their recording.
