Back in the ‘90s The Offspring were one of the most popular punk acts in the world, and while some may argue that they weren’t a punk band, it’s hard to deny that they were pretty damn successful – right up until they became fucking terrible.
Everyone’s favourite guitarist/janitor spoke with The Aspen Times about their upcoming musical turd and the release of their single Coming For You in January of this year.
“We want to do a record, that’s the plan,” he said. “But it’s taking forever … We released this song because we felt good about it immediately. It was one of the first one or two songs we finished, so we were like, ‘If we wait on this it might be another year, year-and-a-half. Why don’t we just put it out and see what happens?” – Aspen Times
After listening to Coming For You many Offspring fans came to the realisation that the band hasn’t released a good song in about 17 years, and the prospect of a new album was about as comforting as an appointment to see a proctologist.
The Offspring had a brief resurgence of not sucking with their 2014 Smash tour, where they played the Smash album in its entirety. In the same year, they also released an EP covering Bad Religion and Pennywise songs. The EP was decent, thus proving that The Offspring, while the band might be competent musicians, these days, they are certainly terrible songwriters.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
So, with a new album on the horizon we have a lot to look forward to. This writer is personally hoping that a giant asteroid obliterates the planet before any more damage is done.
