GREEN DAY’s Billie Joe Armstrong Wants to “Destroy the Phrase ‘Pop-Punk’ Forever”
GREEN DAY frontman and epitome of pop-punk Billie Joe Armstrong has managed to get tongues wagging and music publications clickbaiting, after posting a strange Tweet in which he declares his wish to “destroy the phrase ‘pop-punk’ forever” in 2016.

While it is currently unclear exactly what he means by this cryptic New Years resolution, I’m gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess that it means Green Day will be releasing a new album this year and it will sound pretty different from their older material… But even if this is the case, there’s no way doing anything short of releasing a goregrind album will remove the “pop-punk” label that will basically be permanently associated with the band, who are considered pioneers of the oxymoronic genre.

Green Day haven’t released an album since 2012’s trifecta ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! – but they did release a pretty typically Green Day-sounding Christmas song last week. I guess we’re just gonna have to wait and see what the pop-punkers have in store for us during their 30th year as a band, and what Billie Joe really means by his Tweet.
