Band: Without Wings

This track almost lost me before it had really even kicked off. Guitar sounds like it slips out of time and the drums come in at points throughout that intro that are rather cringe worthy to say the least. I hope these guys didn’t spend a great deal of cash on recording as the mix is a big problem throughout the majority of “To Whom it May Conern”.

In saying that, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that bass come through loud and proud during the beginning. There is nothing I like more than to hear bass really come through and drive the track harder than the paparazzi chasing Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed through the streets of Paris. Although after that initial dose it tends to get lost in the mix and disappears quicker than a fart in a fan factory.

Although my opening to this review may seem like it is gloomier than a Christian journalist in an ISIS camp (too soon? Naaaahhh) I do actually quite enjoy this track.

Once you get past the messy intro these guys move into some really nice sounding riffs and add to that a big improvement coming from behind the kit you’ve got a solid little number. Some of the simple little leads that just flow along are pretty damn killer and a very good example to other acts that you don’t need to go getting super technical with shit….sometimes simple works best!

The drums provide some really good feel through the middle and towards the end. I really like some of the beats he is laying down and I especially dig those little changes and pauses that get thrown in sporadically.

Vocally this guy seems like he knows the shit out of where his voice sits….clean but hard. You don’t get a great deal of variety vocally from him but that honestly goes unnoticed as you can feel the passion and the way he attacks the mic aggressively without fear or uncertainty in his ability.

You get the feeling these guys are heavily influenced by some quality Australian artists including Cog, DLC and Karnivool…….and that is fucking okay with me! (As I finished typing this I thought I best go check out their influences…..low and FUCKING behold! I did miss out on a couple but close enough!!)

If you’re into the aforementioned bands then I do recommend chucking these guys a listen. I’m keen to keep an eye on what comes out of the Without Wings camp in the future. I know local bands don’t have a great deal of cash to throw around on recordings but damn, I’d love to hear some top quality recordings from this band as I do feel this was the major thing that let them down with this particular song.

Peace!
