As a music reviewer, especially one working at a grassroots level with smaller local acts, it’s hard not to get jaded. Indeed, at times, the whole shtick of this website relies on playing up just how cynical we are, as both writers and music fans. Now, just like every tumblr girl’s neutered, quotable caricature of Tupac Shakur, I don’t want you to get it twisted – some of the music we’re submitted is terrible, and I won’t say it’s not a little fun to call it out when it is.
But the vast majority of music – the music we sometimes get flak for not reviewing in a more positive light – isn’t even bad. It just fails to stand out from the crowd. And as sad as it is, with a music scene delocalised over six continents and hundreds of thousands of projects, that’s the real kiss of death. Sometimes being laughably bad is better publicity than being good.
But She Cries Wolf? They stand out from the crowd. They stand out like a fucking ginger with a girlfriend*. They shouldn’t exist, and whether you love them or hate them, you’re forced to at least respect them. It’s no secret that multiple writers here at IPHYB froth them from to eternity, and for good reason. They know how to write a fucking banger.
‘We’re All Arsonists’ is just under four minutes of pure, incendiary bliss. Packed full of scorching riffs that bring to mind the sludgier, Disambiguation-era Underoath at a pace that would make Converge blister, She Cries Wolf pull no punches on their latest single. The vocals soar from strength to strength as well, blending fiery yet articulate mid-range screams with refreshingly raspy cleans in a way that nobody has done this well since Every Time I Die. Make no mistake – the opening of ‘We’re All Arsonists’ might be a call to arms for mosh warriors the world over, and the end could very well serve as the tormented, smoke-filled soundtrack to a Cormac McCarthy novel. But the middle of ‘We’re All Arsonists’ houses a firestorm of a singalong with the potential to set arenas ablaze almost as easily as small clubs if She Cries Wolf play their cards right.
‘We’re All Arsonists’ is just as much a harbinger of things to come for the band as it is a challenge to the rest of the world to top them. I could wax lyrical about She Cries Wolf for three more pages, but it’d be a waste of time when you could actually be listening to them instead. She Cries Wolf have unequivocally arrived, and they demand to be heard.
*Full disclosure: The writer himself is a ginger, and, coincidentally, single.
I Probably Hate Your Band is a shitty website full of asshole writers. We do nothing but destroy the hopes and dreams of young bands, and have never offered a single positive thing to the world. /Sarcasm
