Song: ‘Chasing Cadence’ Band:Dear Life, Location: Hertfordshire, U.K. Date of Release: 01/06/2015 Genre: Alt. Rock For Fans Of: Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday Why They Aren’t Famous: They probably just need more time.
Sometimes I hear a song and I’m just like, “Fuck this band and everything they stand for”. I hate this music with all of my heart. I wish that I could go back in time and assassinate the mother of the person who invented the genre. Fuck their guitars, their vocals, drums, bass – and fuck the backing vocals, too.
Now that I’ve got that out of the way, this is actually some pretty solid music. I may not like what these guys are doing (in theory at least), but I’ll be fucked if they aren’t good at it. Alt. rock is a tricky area, it flirts with pop, punk, and metal. Sometimes that can mean great things, other times it can result in things that are less great. I want to say that this is bad, but they really nail it. I know that there are so many people out there that would dance to this shit.
The composition is probably the most impressive part of this song. The guitars jump into some pretty impressive riffage, but they scale right back to let the vocals cut through. It’s obvious that the guitarists can really play their instruments, but they don’t over-play it – there is a nice balance between lead riffs and basic rhythms. The bass doesn’t shine through a lot, but a few slides and runs give it enough life to make it interesting. He really didn’t have a lot to work with given the structure of the song, but everything he does works really well, so fuck it. The tone is also pretty interesting, extremely well-rounded but a little quiet (as always). I’d actually love to know what his set up is, so um, someone tell me?
The drumming is fine, but probably a little ‘by the numbers’. Also, the use of toms becomes a little tacky by the end of the song. It just feels so uninspired at times. But that’s just commercial rock in a nutshell – if you’re too interesting you’re likely to become inaccessible. But, whatever, there’s nothing wrong with what is going on here, I just wish he’d lay off the toms a little bit in the future.
It’s hard to deny the talent of the vocalist. His range is impressive, and his dynamics are perfect. There are a few moments where he drops his volume, but none of the ‘colour’ drops from his voice. Anyway, this dude has a powerful voice and he really knows how to use it – “Give me one more chance” – I fucking believe that shit. I have a huge axe to grind with vocalists who don’t make me feel anything. So often I hear what they are singing, I listen to the words and all I can feel is that it’s someone reciting words at me. Some bored asshole reading words off a sheet of paper. No heart, no soul. These words need to mean something, otherwise what is the point? And if they mean something, sing it like you fucking mean it. Well, this motherfucker means it. I feel this son – I believe him.
Now with that said and done, I don’t really rate the lyrics that highly. They are a little generic but whatever. One thing that is cool is how they work into the structure of the song. “I see the light, I won’t go without a fight, at least not with you around” – The actual composition here is awesome, and that’s the sort of thing which, again, takes this song from something generic to something pretty damn solid.
All in all, this is a great effort. I tried my very hardest to hate this but I couldn’t do it. I’m a fan, these fucking guys have won me over and I’m not even mad.
I Probably Hate Your Band is a shitty website full of asshole writers. We do nothing but destroy the hopes and dreams of young bands, and have never offered a single positive thing to the world. /Sarcasm
