Song review: Desolate Minds
Band: Amethyst Close

Date of Release: 23rd October 2013
As anyone who remotely follows this page probably knows, I’m about as big a fan of Djent as I am of making sweet, illicit love to the mothers of band members who submit stuff for us to review. It’s good shit, and even when it’s bad, it’s usually still interesting, exactly like said sexual liaisons with maternal figures. Bitches have experience, yo.
So which category does this fall into, as far as Djent goes? Well…It’s actually a bit of a peculiar one, for a few reasons. The djenty parts are kind of uninspiring, despite a few flashes of tasty fretwork, but the real hero is the cool little jazz/funk interlude. I can honestly say I did not see it coming at all, just like that time Emotion Lord‘s mum inadvertently gave me a snowball. Fucking bitch.
The vocals are the other thing that I’m kind of iffy about…I can’t quite decide whether I like them, but I know I’m definitely not much a fan of the lyrical flow. It seems ill-considered and clunky at times. His pronunciation is also marred by a strange quality that I can’t quite put my finger on. That being said, the gang cleans during the interlude are spot on and add a nice variety to the tune.
The song doesn’t get boring, which is a plus, and I’m pretty sure a decent amount of that is down to the drums. I’m heavily suspecting they are programmed, but they are quite well thought out regardless. As far as accents, fills and overall placement, they tick all three boxes with aplomb. Good job.
To summarise, this is decent without being a world beating song. It’s not unpleasant to listen to, it doesn’t make you want to instantly turn it off and you aren’t upset about listening to it more than once. Solid

Chris Giacca just may be the worst writer in the world, but it doesn't matter because he probably still has a bigger audience than you, so he is by default automatically right about everything. No exceptions. He's currently writing a novel which will be uploaded in single chapter installments as spoken word on bandcamp. Physical releases will be on laser disc only, limited to 17 1/2 units. Don't ask about the half.
