POP PUNK BANDS SHUT UP AND TAKE FUCKING NOTE OF HOW SHIT IS DONE!!!!!!
In the last couple of days, we’ve posted a couple of reviews of some of my favourite Pop-Punk going around, first with Half-Hearted Hero’s gem Periphery and now this brilliant song by Baltimore band The Old Line.
My long standing criticism of the vast majority of pop-punk bands is that they seem to be even more reliant on cliches than even the most cliche exponents of most other genres. These guys don’t. Even though the intro sounds vaguely like Adam’s Song by Blink 182, that’s exactly where the comparison ends. Every thing from the catchy as fuck guitar hook to the tone of the vocalists (both of them) voices is really refreshing in a genre that too often feels stale and forced.
And holy fuck the chorus! The chorus man!!!! Jesus. Not only is it a brilliant hook, but the lyrics are just perfect. “You’ve got such a way with words, Especially the ones that cut the worst”… now THERE’S a line! Anyone wondering what that elusive quality we often look for in a song, yet very rarely find, is look no further. This song fucking has it in spades!
I’m actually finding it really super hard to find anything to fault in this song. The drums are great, shifting feel at exactly the right times to stop it feeling one-paced, and beautifully accenting the vocals to the point that it makes them stand out even more than they already do on merit alone. Even the bass tone is there, he sits on the root note sure, but it doesn’t detract from the song in the slightest. I can give no higher praise than this: If this was the only song your band was ever able to record, you’d take it as a win and be satisfied that you’d created something truly special.
I seriously just want to keep listening to this song over and over.
Overall IPHYB Rating: 9.5/10

Chris Giacca just may be the worst writer in the world, but it doesn't matter because he probably still has a bigger audience than you, so he is by default automatically right about everything. No exceptions. He's currently writing a novel which will be uploaded in single chapter installments as spoken word on bandcamp. Physical releases will be on laser disc only, limited to 17 1/2 units. Don't ask about the half.
