Song review: “Red Wine Blues”
Location: Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Date of Release: 17/03/2014
Genre: Pure Awesome
On this fine evening I shall be awarding one of the much coveted (and even more-so reviled) IPHYB ‘Beefy’ awards! This particular award, is the Rain Man Award for Video Autism, and we are awarding it to our new friends Bateman here, for having what I can only describe as “the weirdest fucking video I’ve seen since my girlfriend made me stop browsing eFukt.”
Now I’m not going to go spoiling anything for you, my little beefcakes, so you’re going to have to watch this one for yourselves! I’m only here to review the music, after all.
Well fuck you, it’s not.
When I first heard “Red Wine Blues” I was in such a state of shock, due to the pure “what-the-fuck-ness” of just about everything these guys were hammering my senses with, I seriously didn’t know what was going on. After a few more listens, some adjustments to my prefrontal cortex (made with an ice pick), I have grown to love this band. And I mean love as in I really do like them, and not like the “love” (hate) a stepfather has for his new wife’s annoying, ginger child.
Absolutely loved the guitars in this song, they were a perfect blend of punk-y and thrash-y.
The bass was pretty rad, also (for a change!). Leveled a bit low (especially during the break/bass “solo”), but old mate had a solid tone going on.
Good use of accenting, great snare sound, and finally some REAL recorded drums.
“What.The.Fuck?” -is what went through my mind, when I first heard this ‘interesting’ and ‘unique’ vocal style.
Don’t get me wrong, shit sounds awesome and bad-ass as hell, but my god it’s different.
The vox definitely grew on me after a few listens, they do sound odd, but it’s also refreshing to hear someone doing something different.
Reminiscent of other Melbourne locals King Parrot, they’re the kind of band who make me want to go to pub, slam down a beer, and just fucking destroy shit. And I don’t even drink.
If you’re into bad-ass, fuck shit up music, definitely check these mad cunts out.
Overall IPHYB Rating: 8.5/10
Personal Enjoyment Factor: 10/10
